We’ve all been there. It’s Wednesday afternoon, and you’ve decided to start fresh. But instead of starting right now, you tell yourself: “I’ll just wait until Monday.”
Monday feels clean. Monday feels like a fresh slate. But there will probably never be a perfect Monday. Or a perfect week. Or a perfect moment.
Change doesn’t have to begin with a perfect day. Sometimes waiting for the perfect Monday simply delays the decision to begin. Real change has to fit inside real life.
The Illusion of the Perfect Monday
Why do we put so much pressure on “starting Monday”? It’s because we imagine the future version of our life will be easier. We think that by Monday, we will magically have more willpower, more time, and fewer distractions.
But real life doesn’t work that way. When Monday arrives, the alarm still goes off. Work is still stressful. The kids still need dinner. If your plan only works on a perfect day, it’s not a plan – it’s a fantasy.
As I wrote in my book, The End of Dieting, Monday is the biggest liar of the week. It gives you the psychological comfort of postponement, letting you feel like something is planned without requiring you to do anything today. That’s false control.
Why We Postpone Change
We often postpone change because we imagine the future version of our life will be easier. But real behavior change has to happen inside imperfect circumstances. That’s true in health, work, and personal development.
Waiting for the perfect moment is just another form of procrastination. It gives you a temporary feeling of relief, but it doesn’t move you forward.
Real Change Happens Inside Real Life
This is where the Identity Shift Method comes in. You don’t need to wait for the right mood, or promise yourself that tomorrow will be different. You can simply make the next useful choice.
Real change isn’t about having a perfect week. It’s about who you are becoming through the choices you repeat, even on the messy, imperfect days. If you believe you are someone who prioritizes their health, you don’t need a perfect Monday to prove it. You just do the next small thing.
How to Start Without the “Perfect” Setup
So, how do you break the cycle of waiting for the perfect day?
1. Take the Smallest Step
Don’t overhaul your entire life on a Monday. Just do one small thing today. Drink a glass of water. Take a 5-minute walk. Read one page of a book. The goal isn’t to be impressive; it’s to be repeatable. Every small win is a brick in the foundation of your new identity.
2. Stop Negotiating with Tomorrow
When you catch yourself saying “I’ll start tomorrow,” pause. Ask yourself: “What is one thing I can do right now?” The next useful choice is enough.
3. Focus on Identity, Not the Calendar
Instead of saying “I am starting a diet on Monday,” say “I am a person who makes healthy choices.” When you focus on identity, the calendar becomes irrelevant. You don’t need a fresh week to be a fresh you.
The Permission Slip You Don’t Need
Many people wait for permission to change – from a doctor, a diagnosis, or a perfect Monday. That permission slip is not required. You don’t have to earn the right to begin again. You don’t need to punish yourself first.
You can simply make the next useful choice. Today already counts.
Conclusion
There will probably never be a perfect Monday. Or a perfect week. Or a perfect moment. Real change has to fit inside real life.
Stop waiting for the perfect day. Start today, with whatever you have, right where you are. A smaller, more realistic step can be enough.
